SENCE was a CIC created to collaborate with people with special educational needs (SEN) and help them to reach their potential. This was through the form of better employment opportunities and the enrichment of everyday life. SENCE’s mission was to strive for equality for people with SEN through education and promote the use of the social model of disability.
The CIC consisted of a ‘seed-to-plate’ scheme that worked with college students aged 16-24 and took a holistic approach to incorporating creativity and design principles into the horticulture courses at the City of Bristol College.
I was Head of Design within SENCE and my role was focused upon the the user experience of teaching of design thinking to individuals with SEN. It was very important to me that any teaching was collaborative with the student and that it was SENCE was inclusive in its approach to designing. This was most validated when I received praise from the City of Bristol College tutors for my teaching techniques and my ability to visually communicate ideas with students.
